Thrissur Emerges as Kerala’s Top City in Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026
Thrissur has emerged as the highest-ranked city in Kerala in the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index (OEGCI) 2026, highlighting the city’s growing economic importance, quality-of-life factors and urban development potential.
According to a Times of India report published on September 19, 2026, Thrissur secured an overall global rank of 477 in the 2026 index. Kochi followed at 489 and Kozhikode at 499. The index evaluates 1,000 cities worldwide across five major dimensions: Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance.
Thrissur Leads Kerala Cities
The 2026 rankings place Thrissur ahead of other major Kerala cities in the overall index. The rankings reported for Kerala cities are:
- Thrissur – 477
- Kochi – 489
- Kozhikode – 499
- Kollam – 623
- Thiruvananthapuram – 624
- Kottayam – 696
- Kannur – 772
Thrissur recorded a rank of 334 in Economics, 611 in Human Capital, 584 in Quality of Life, 468 in Environment and 415 in Governance.
What Makes Thrissur Significant for Real Estate?
A city's performance across economic, human-capital, environmental and quality-of-life indicators can influence how residential and commercial areas develop over time. Thrissur's position in the 2026 index therefore provides an important backdrop for understanding the city's real-estate landscape.
Thrissur has long been an important commercial and financial centre in Kerala. The Times of India report points to the city's concentration of financial institutions, gold-based industries and healthcare establishments, along with green spaces and cultural institutions, as factors contributing to its performance.
These characteristics are relevant to property demand because cities with established employment, business, healthcare and service ecosystems can generate demand for a range of properties, including family homes, apartments, commercial buildings, office spaces and land.
Potential Implications for Property Buyers and Investors
The recognition does not by itself guarantee future property-price increases. However, the index provides another indicator of Thrissur's broader urban and economic profile.
For homebuyers, the city's combination of established neighbourhoods, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, commercial activity and cultural amenities can make location selection an important consideration.
For property investors, areas with improving connectivity, expanding commercial activity and access to employment and essential services may deserve closer examination. Individual properties should still be evaluated based on factors such as location, road access, land value, infrastructure, development potential, rental demand and prevailing market prices.
Thrissur's Economic Strength
Thrissur's 334th position in the Economics category was one of the strongest aspects of its 2026 performance. The city has an established presence in banking, finance, jewellery-related businesses, retail and healthcare.
The Times of India report also noted the importance of Thrissur's financial institutions, gold industry and large NRI population. These economic connections contribute to the city's role as a commercial centre and can support diverse housing and commercial-property requirements.
Infrastructure and Future Urban Growth
The Oxford Economics ranking also highlights areas where Thrissur can continue to develop. The district administration has emphasised the need to improve performance in areas such as economics and human capital while maintaining gains in other indicators.
For the real-estate sector, continued improvements in infrastructure, employment opportunities, urban amenities and connectivity could influence the way residential and commercial development expands across Thrissur and its surrounding areas.
What This Means for Thrissur Property Market
Thrissur's position in the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026 adds another positive indicator to the city's broader urban profile. However, a global city ranking should be considered alongside local property-market factors rather than used as a standalone measure for investment decisions.
Property buyers should compare individual locations, accessibility, neighbourhood development, infrastructure, land characteristics and current market values before making a purchase.
With Thrissur ranking as Kerala's highest-ranked city in the 2026 Oxford Economics Global Cities Index, the city continues to attract attention not only as a cultural and commercial centre but also as an important urban market within Kerala.
